Android is now officially the No.1 smartphone OS

androidGoogle’s Android OS has taken almost 50% of the global smartphone market share, research firm Canalys has said in its report.

Android is currently being used by almost all major cellphone manufacturers like – HTC, Motorola, Samsung and LG.

Apple’s iOS is second in the list with a considerable distance, reporting 19% market share in comparison to Android’s 50%. Although Apple has overtaken Nokia as the world’s largest individual smartphone vendor.

On the other hand Samsung, which sells Android smartphones as well as its own Bada branded devices, shipped some 17 million devices, a rise of 421 per cent versus a year ago.

Another complaint filed against HTC by Apple

Apple Inc. has filed a second patent- infringement complaint against HTC Corporation at the U.S. International Trade Commission, looking to block imports of “personal electronic devices” manufactured by them.

The complaint was filed on July 8, although the notice doesn’t reveal the nature of the complaint.

A judgement is expected on August 5th and the court can actually block imports if they find that the patents have been infringed.

S3 Graphics acquired by HTC

The Taiwanese smartphone maker, HTC, announced today that it will purchase S3 Graphics and its patent portfolio from VIA for a hefty amount of $300 Million.

Also part of the deal is a perpetual license to the patents’ former owner, so that the chipset manufacturer can keep cranking out silicon without fear of legal reprisal.
